Assalamualaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barkatahu (May Peace, Blessings & Mercy of Allah Be Upon You)

Article by Brother Asim ul Haq

The Article is in reply to series of allegations made by author in his book which can be accessed here: What Prophet Muhammad Did His Whole Life?

Titles of these allegations against Prophet are mentioned below, Inshallah each allegation would be answered in individual article by titles mentioned below

21) Muhammad told Muslims to tell lie.
22) Muhammad was a looter demanded 20% from loot.
23) Muhammad ordered muslims not to ask question

5. Muhammad recommended wife- beating and he also beat his favourite wife Ayesha.

Again a decieving heading, Not a single proof he provided where it says Prophet peace be upon him recommended wife- beating as claimed by Auther and by the way this is same old copy/paste stuff, let us see what he have to say.

he said
Muhammad, himself, is recorded as physically striking his favorite wife (from her own testimony). It is not known how he treated his less-favored wives.

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

The Prophet was on a journey and a slave named Anjasha was chanting (singing) for the camels to let them go fast (while driving). The Prophet said, “O Anjasha, drive slowly (the camels) with the glass vessels!” Abu Qilaba said, “By the glass vessels’ he meant the women (riding the camels).”[Bukhari Volume 8, Book 73, Number 229]

Comment: Leave a side beating he forbade the camel driver to slow down, so that it may not harm women. I will provide Aisha’s Ra own testimony that Prophet peace be upon him never beat any of the women.

The Qur’an:

Sura (4:34) – “Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.”

Now see the verse

[004:034] Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to Allah and to their husbands), and guard in the husbands absence what Allah orders them to guard (e.g. their chastity, their husbands property, etc.). As to those women on whose part you see illconduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful), but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance). Surely, Allah is Ever Most High, Most Great.

From the Hadith:

Bukhari (72:715) – A woman came to Muhammad and begged her to stop her husband from beating her. Her skin was bruised so badly that she it is described as being “greener” than the green veil she was wearing. Muhammad did not admonish her husband, but instead ordered her to return to him and submit to his sexual desires.

This is the hadith Volume 7, Book 72, Number 715: Narrated ‘Ikrima: Rifa’a divorced his wife whereupon ‘AbdurRahman bin Az-Zubair Al-Qurazi married her. ‘Aisha said that the lady (came), wearing a green veil (and complained to her (Aisha) of her husband and showed her a green spot on her skin caused by beating). It was the habit of ladies to support each other, so when Allah’s Apostle came, ‘Aisha said, “I have not seen any woman suffering as much as the believing women. Look! Her skin is greener than her clothes!” When ‘AbdurRahman heard that his wife had gone to the Prophet, he came with his two sons from another wife. She said, “By Allah! I have done no wrong to him but he is impotent and is as useless to me as this,” holding and showing the fringe of her garment, ‘Abdur-Rahman said, “By Allah, O Allah’s Apostle! She has told a lie! I am very strong and can satisfy her but she is disobedient and wants to go back to Rifa’a.” Allah’s Apostle said, to her, “If that is your intention, then know that it is unlawful for you to remarry Rifa’a unless Abdur-Rahman has had sexual intercourse with you.” Then the Prophet saw two boys with ‘Abdur-Rahman and asked (him), “Are these your sons?” On that ‘AbdurRahman said, “Yes.” The Prophet said, “You claim what you claim (i.e.. that he is impotent)? But by Allah, these boys resemble him as a crow resembles a crow,”

Brother Karim replied in detail

In the above Hadith, there are few points to notice and mention:

1- The man failed to follow Noble Verse 4:34 which was sent by Allah Almighty to protect women from harmfull men.

2- The woman was trying to get back with her first husband. In Islam, if a woman gets divorced or divorces herself from her husband through the Islamic court by “Khala'”, then the only way she can get back with her husband, or her husband gets back to her is by HER MARRYING ANOTHER PERSON, HAVE SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WITH HIM, AND THEN GET A DIVORCE FROM HIM. This is to guarantee that divorce would not be a joke among Muslims.

3- The woman was claiming that her second husband was sexually no good. The husband disputed that, and brought his two sons from another marriage as a proof that he can perform sex. The Prophet peace be upon him then told the woman “by Allah, these boys resemble him as a crow resembles a crow”.

4- Aisha’s opinion about the woman’s bruise doesn’t prove or disprove anything. She got angry because she saw another woman badly beaten, which is perfectly fine and acceptable. But her emotions and opinions are not Islamic Verdicts!

Many authentic hadith proof that Islam liberated women and made them free. See hadith Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Number 2138 & 2139.

In ‘Sahih Muslim, Book 018, Number 4251’ we see that a woman in islam is even allowed to take from her husband’s property without his knowledge if he falls below this basic level of supporting her. Also Umar Ibn khattab told the prophet that ‘women had the upperhand over men in Medina in’ in Sahih Bukhari,Volume 7, Book 62, Number 119′ , the prophet showed a smile after hearing this.

This clearly proofs that ayesha’s(ra) reaction was based on emotions, which is normal and perfectly fine. We also have to notice that in pre-islamic (before islam) time women were depressed by the arabs, Islam came to liberate those women and to give them many rights. Unfortunately some muslim men (still today) fail to follow the true message of Islam, instead of this they follow their evil (pagan) cultural practices and customs! , this has nothing to do with Islam! Islam honours women and clearly fobids the cruel beating of wives!

Secondly the hadith tells only one part of the incident, it doesn’t mention anything about the decision made by the prophet after this incident , simply because only one part of the story is known and written down. So it’s rediculous to say that Islam and the prophet allowed wife beating, as a matter of fact the opposite is true!

Noble Verses and Sayings about the prohibition of wife beating:

The following Noble Verses and Sayings from the Noble Quran and Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him respectively seem to very well support the above interpretation:

“…Do not retain them (i.e., your wives) to harm them…”(The Noble Quran, 2:231)

“If a wife fears cruelty or desertion on her husband’s part, there is no blame on them if they arrange an amicable settlement between themselves; and such settlement is best; even though men’s souls are swayed by greed. But if ye do good and practise self-restraint, God is well-acquainted with all that ye do.” (The Noble Quran, 4:128)

Narrated Mu’awiyah al-Qushayri: “I went to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) and asked him: What do you say (command) about our wives? He replied: Give them food what you have for yourself, and clothe them by which you clothe yourself, and do not beat them, and do not revile them.” (Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Number 2139)

Narrated Mu’awiyah ibn Haydah: “I said: Apostle of Allah, how should we approach our wives and how should we leave them? He replied: Approach your tilth when or how you will, give her (your wife) food when you take food, clothe when you clothe yourself, do not revile her face, and do not beat her.”(Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Number 2138)

“on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If ye take a dislike to them it may be that ye dislike a thing, and God brings about through it a great deal of good.” (The Noble Quran, 4:19)…..

This would be allowed only if it is not pre-planned to get back to the previous husband, such kind of marriage is called tahleel/halala

Here is the complete hadith

MUSLIM Book 004, Number 2127: Muhammad b. Qais said (to the people): Should I not narrate to you (a hadith of the Holy Prophet) on my authority and on the authority of my mother? We thought that he meant the mother who had given him birth. He (Muhammad b. Qais) then reported that it was ‘A’isha who had narrated this: Should I not narrate to you about myself and about the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)? We said: Yes. She said: When it was my turn for Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) to spend the night with me, he turned his side, put on his mantle and took off his shoes and placed them near his feet, and spread the corner of his shawl on his bed and then lay down till he thought that I had gone to sleep. He took hold of his mantle slowly and put on the shoes slowly, and opened the door and went out and then closed it lightly. I covered my head, put on my veil and tightened my waist wrapper, and then went out following his steps till he reached Baqi’. He stood there and he stood for a long time. He then lifted his hands three times, and then returned and I also returned He hastened his steps and I also hastened my steps. He ran and I too ran. He came (to the house) and I also came (to the house). I, however, preceded him and I entered (the house), and as I lay down in the bed, he (the Holy Prophet) entered the (house), and said: Why is it, O ‘A’isha, that you are out of breath? I said: There is nothing. He said: Tell me or the Subtle and the Aware would inform me. I said: Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransom for you, and then I told him (the whole story). He said: Was it the darkness (of your shadow) that I saw in front of me? I said: Yes. He struck me on the chest which caused me pain, and then said: Did you think that Allah and His Apostle would deal unjustly with you? She said: Whatsoever the people conceal, Allah will know it. He said: Gabriel came to me when you saw me. He called me and he concealed it from you. I responded to his call, but I too concealed it from you (for he did not come to you), as you were not fully dressed. I thought that you had gone to sleep, and I did not like to awaken you, fearing that you may be frightened. He (Gabriel) said: Your Lord has commanded you to go to the inhabitants of Baqi’ (to those lying in the graves) and beg pardon for them. I said: Messenger of Allah, how should I pray for them (How should I beg forgiveness for them)? He said: Say, Peace be upon the inhabitants of this city (graveyard) from among the Believers and the Muslims, and may Allah have mercy on those who have gone ahead of us, and those who come later on, and we shall, God willing, join you.(end)

My Friend Dr Asif Mehboob kave from Bombay, powai replied;

AS A DOCTOR I ANALYSED THIS HADITH, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN HOME OF AISHA R.A. & JANNATUL BAQI IS QUITE LONG.

NOW SEE THE BOLD PART OF HADITH IN BLUE,

AS AISHA R.A WAS AFRAID THAT PROPHET (peace be upon him) WILL COME TO KNOW SHE WAS FALLOWING HER, SO IN ORDER TO AVOID THIS SHE CAME RUNNING BACK TO HOME,

IT IS NATURAL PHYSIOLOGICAL PHENOMENON WHEN A PERSON RUNS FOR A DISTANCE MORE THAN 100 meters, BODY RESPONDS WITH HYPERVENTILATION.

PERSONS BREATHS FAST & EVEN HEART RATE INCREASES, BLOOD PRESSURE INCREASES, DURING SUCH SITUATION IF YOU GIVE SLIGHT PUSH ON CHEST PERSON WILL FEEL PAIN. YOU CAN DO THIS ON YOURSELF ALSO TO SEE EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENS,IN ABOVE HADITH PROPHET SAAS JUST GIVE A PUSH TO AISHA R.A & SHE FELT PAIN …..(end of his saying)

Moreover

Aaishah (Radhiallahu ‘Anha) herself said: Allaah’s Messenger (Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Wa Sallam) never hit anything with his hand ever, except when fighting in the path of Allaah. Nor did he ever hit a servant or a woman.” [Recorded by Musnad Ishaq bin Rawahiya no: 698, Ibn Maajah Kitab al Nikah hadeeth no: 1984 Al-Albaanee said it is Saheeh.]

This clears all the things Alhumdulillah.

Lastly see beautiful Explanation by brother Kevin Abdullah here: http://www.quransearch.com/karim/mistranslations_of_hadiths.htm

.

He made many points in his article, one is, the term used in the hadith is: Lahada.

Imam Nawawi in his Sharh states that: The word “lahada” according to the lexicographers means, “to push” (dafa’a).(End quote for details see his full article)

So it is clear Prophet Peace be upon him never beat his wives nor any other woman.

Author quoted
Abu Dawud (2141) – “Iyas bin ‗Abd Allah bin Abi Dhubab reported the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do not beat Allah’s handmaidens, but when ‗Umar came to the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) and said: Women have become emboldened towards their husbands, he (the Prophet) gave permission to beat them. Then many women came round the family of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) complaining against their husbands. So the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) said : Many women have gone round Muhammad’s family complaining against their husbands. They are not the best among you.” At first, Muhammad forbade men from beating their wives, but he rescinded this once it was reported that women were becoming emboldened toward their husbands. Beatings are sometimes necessary to keep women in their place.

Above hadith is criticised by Imam Bukhari and Imam Al Baghwi because Iyas bin Abd Allah is not sahabi according to them as it is mentioned in Awn al Mabood under this hadith

(Imam) Munzari said it is mentioned by Nisai and Ibne Majah and (Imam) Abu al Qasim Baghwi said i don’t know Iyas bin Abdullah Narrated any other hadith then this and (Imam) Bukhari mentioned this hadeeth in his Tareekh and said It is not known that Iyas was in company (of Prophet peace be upon him), and Ibne Abi Hatim said Iyas bin Abdullah bin Abi Dhubab Ad Dosi Madni was in the company (of Prophet) i heard my father and Abu Zur`ah both said same.(end)

.Even if we consider it authentic then Brother Karim replied to Silas a christian missionary

The above statement is such a big and cheap lie, the prophet was clearly condemning those husbands and not the women!

(For the proof, see: Riyad as Saliheen chapter 34, nr 279 .

.

Prophet (peace be upon him) told the believers that ‘those husbands are not the best among you’. Prophet (peace be upon him) also revoked the dispensation. Further this hadith proves that wife beating was not permitted at all, since Umar came to ask for permission of the prophet (peace be upon him), if hitting ones wife was normal and allowed in any case or in many cases, umar wouldn’t asked the prophet (peace be upon him) permission for it, therefore:

.

The man has no right to beat his wife as per the explicit prohibition of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

The basic rule (asl) is strict prohibition, followed by dispensation (rukhsa) as explicated by the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the hadith where Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Do not hit the maidservants of Allah ! ” ( la tadribu ima’ Allah ). Then Umar came to the Prophet and said ( by way of exaggeration , cf. ‘Awn al-Ma `bud ) : “The wome are rebelling ( dha’irna ) against their husbands ! ” So the prophet gave a dispensation ( rakhkhasa ) to beat them. Whereupon women started pouring to see the family of the messenger of Allah and complain about their husbands. Seeing this, the prophet said: “Many women have poured in to see the family of Muhammad, complaining of their husbands, and the latter are certainly not the best of you” (Narrated from Iyas ibn `Abd Allah ibn Abi Dhubab by al-Shafi`i in his Musnad, Abu Dawud, al-Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, and al-Hakim. Al-

.

Nawawi and al-Suyuti graded it a sound (sahih) narration in Riyad al-Salihin and al-Jami` al-Saghir respectively).

Another authentic version in Sahih Ibn Hibban (9:491) adds that the Prophet then revoked the dispensation. His statement that “the best of you are the best in their behavior towards their wives, and I am the best of you in my behavior towards my wives” shows that wife-beaters are the worst men and

.

No Muslim wife-beater can possibly claim to imitate the Prophet , although Allah Most High said to imitate him : {Verily in the messenger of Allah ye have a good example for him who looketh unto Allah and the last Day, and remembereth Allah much} (33:21).

Authentic Ahadith which clears the anti-islamic claim:

Muawiyah al Qarshi said I went to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) and asked him: What do you say (command) about our wives? He replied: Give them food what you have for yourself, and clothe them by which you clothe yourself, and do not beat them, and do not revile them. (Abu Dawud Book 11, Number 2139

and this hadith

“Verily I declare the gravity of the rights of the two weak persons: the orphan and the woman.”

[Mustadrak al Haakim #211Hadith taken from Women in Islam by Abdul Rahman As Saleha translated by Abu Salman Deya ud din Eberle]

and

“Do not force the daughters and girls for they are precious and delightful companions.” [Musnad Ahmad #17411 and verified, Hadith taken from Women in Islam by Abdul Rahman As Saleha translated by Abu Salman Deya ud din Eberle]

ISLAM is the only religion which protects, respects, and honors women. And no one , if follows islam , can even think about harming women in any possible way.

MAY ALLAH guide us all to the right path Amin.

He quoted

Ishaq 969 – Commands that a married woman be “put in a separate room and beaten lightly” if she “act in a sexual manner toward others.” According to the Hadith, this can be for an offense as petty as merely being alone with a man to whom she is not related.

According to Islamic law, a husband may strike his wife for any one of the following four reasons:

– She does not attempt to make herself beautiful for him (ie. “let’s herself go”)

– She refuses to meet his sexual demands

– She leaves the house without his permission or a “legitimate reason”

– She neglects her religious duties

What kind of reference is this?? I can’t find this narration in this book, if it is there then we ask them to quote the page no: and we will see the chain There is nothiing like this in page 969

let us see what actually Islam says:

Narrated from Jaabir that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said in his Farewell Sermon:

“Fear Allah concerning women! Verily you have taken them on the security of Allah, and intercourse with them has been made lawful unto you by words of Allah. You too have rights over them, and that they should not allow anyone to sit on your bed whom you do not like. But if they do that, you can chastise them but not severely(another hadeeth says but without causing injury or leaving a mark). Their rights upon you are that you should provide them with food and clothing in a fitting manner” (Narrated by Muslim, 1218)

Comment: We ask from the author, is there any non Muslim husband who can permit his wife to allow any other person on their bed? See the beauty of Islam even then it says, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them but without causing injury or leaving a mark, if it is useful. Their rights upon you are that you should provide them with food and clothing in a fitting manner” Subhan’Allah

All above is for good not for bad because Allah says “O you who believe! Ward off yourselves and your families against a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones” [al-Tahreem 66:6]

Social Drawback: Muslim women is badly abused by muslims and she thought it’s her destiny. So, every non-muslim should try to marry a muslim girl to save her life from being hell.

Above statement is nothing more then a lie, Just quoting one hadith, The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) spoke beautiful word concerning kind treatment of one’s wife, stating that when the husband feeds his wife and puts a morsel of food in her mouth, he earns the reward of doing an act of charity. He said, “You never spend anything but you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel of food that you lift to your wife’s mouth.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6352; Muslim, 1628.

and now see the Fatwa
It is haraam for the wife to ask for a divorce for no reason, and it is haraam for her to go out of the house for no reason without her husband’s permission. But if she is being harmed as a result of staying in her husband’s house or staying married to him, then she has the right to ask him for a divorce. She has the right to leave the house and go to her family so that she can escape from her husband’s abuse and beatings. The husband has to fear Allaah with regard to what Allaah has put him in charge of. The Prophet urged good treatment of women, and Allaah commanded His Messenger SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to treat people on a reasonable basis. Whatever the case, if the husband’s abuse is ongoing then she has the right to ask for the marriage to be annulled, and he has to respond to that request, or he has to repent to Allaah, and stop harming her.
